North Seattle: The area between NE 85th Street and the Seattle city limits at NE 145th Street was not annexed until 1954. The pace of early community life was set by farming and logging, and the area became renowned for its horse trails, pastures, and polo fields (one of which was converted into the municipal Jackson Park Golf Course). The automobile accelerated development after World War II with the 1950 opening of Northgate, one of the nation's first shopping malls, the proliferation of Lake City's numerous car dealerships, and completion of Interstate-5 in the mid-1960s
